Working Styles

The way people work and where they work has changed due to the increased range of ICT technologies. Most roles now involve the use of some computer skills. Discuss how the way we work has changed, e.g:

  • Office software is used instead of pen and paper - e.g. spreadsheets for accounting, word processing for report and letter writing
  • Car mechanics use computerised analysis equipment to diagnose faults
  • Shop assistants use computerised tills (EPOS) and payment systems (EFTPOS)
  • Teachers use computers, interactive whiteboards and a range of software
  • Graphic artists and illustrators use specialised graphic packages
  • Products are designed using CAD and manufactured using CAM
  • The way we communicate at work (e-mail, videoconferencing, telepresence)
  • Flexible working
  • Teleworking
  • Shift in work/life balance

Research 2 or 3 of the above in detail and discuss advantages and disadvantages of each. The focus of your discussion should be on what impact the technology you are researching has had on our working lives.
